Year One Phonics check pilot

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Education and Training

A Year One Phonics check pilot will begin at 35 Tasmanian schools next month to support improved educational outcomes across the state and give students the best possible start at learning.

Phonics is an essential skill for learning to read and write and is a key part of an early years literacy program, as detailed in the Australian Curriculum: English.

The teaching of phonics is responsive to student learning and intentionally makes connections to the learner’s writing and reading experiences.

The short phonics check will capture evidence to track progress which will help inform teacher practice and identify areas for improvement.

Professional learning support will be provided to schools participating in the Pilot to support the administration of the check and to build knowledge and practice in the teaching of phonics.

The Tasmanian Government recognises that literacy is a key area of importance and has set an aspirational target of 100 per cent functional literacy for all Tasmanians.
