Local Mudgee woman Veronica Baskerville shares her journey from hospital support staff to starting her training as a registered nurse.
Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) is committed to growing its workforce, no matter the stage of life people are in.
Mudgee resident, Veronica Baskerville, first started working at Mudgee Hospital in the kitchen and as a hospital assistant in 2014.
“When I was delivering food, or cleaning I would see the nurses and the way they cared and interacted with the patients,” Ms Baskerville said.
“It was like I had a lightbulb moment – one day that was something I could do too.”
After some major life event delays, Veronica promised herself she would start studying to become a nurse once her youngest child started school
Veronica is an Assistant in Nursing at Mudgee Health Service, and is now completing her Registered Nurse training.
“I absolutely love it. All those years ago, I was so inspired by the nurses and they way they cared for their patients. I knew then it was something I wanted to do too,” Ms Baskerville said.
“To care for someone on this level is just so rewarding. I really love my job and just love caring for people.
“Being a mature aged student didn’t worry me. I had life experience and skills behind me that I also think help me with the work. I would encourage anyone thinking about it to give it ago.
“I am so happy that I did it, and I am proud to have shown my children what is possible and what you can do.”
Mudgee Health Service Manager Kylie Strong lauded the commitment Veronica continues to show not just to her progression, but also to her patients.
“Veronica is such an asset to our team. She is driven, passionate and great with our patients,” Ms Strong said.
