Young stars power Victoria to WNCL win

Victoria’s young talent was on show for all to see in a seven-wicket win over New South Wales in Adelaide.

New South Wales won the toss and elected to bat first, Victoria making immediate inroads to have the Breakers at 2-0 before a 115-run partnership between Naomi Stalenberg (53) and Rachel Trenaman (52) steadied the ship.

But when they departed in consecutive overs, the Breakers couldn’t build another meaningful partnership and were bowled out for 186. Annabel Sutherland claiming 3-27 to be the pick of the Victorian bowlers.

After losing Elyse Villani for a duck, young stars Makinley Blows and Sutherland batted magnificently, compiling a 164-run stand to shut New South Wales out of the game.

Blows was outstanding, reaching her maiden WNCL century while Sutherland continued her excellent game with an assured 63. When Blows departed for 105, Victoria’s middle order finished the job to complete the victory.

Victoria will now take a break from WNCL duties as the Rebel Women’s Big Bash League approaches, before picking up the campaign again in early January.
