A focus on connecting, skills building, teamwork and fun accompanied the theme of ‘It’s up to YOUth’ for this year’s Youth Week in The Hills.

Basketball competitions, skateboarding jams, a clothes swap and digital writing workshop were just some of the popular activities enjoyed as part of the celebrations, which ran from April 4 to April 21.

Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi said he was impressed at the level of engagement in this year’s Youth Week.

“Youth Week is all about having a great time, trying new things and connecting with others – something that hasn’t been possible for some time,” Mayor Gangemi said.

“I met some very talented and engaged young people and enjoyed joining them to celebrate Youth Week,” he said.

Mayor Gangemi said he was delighted at the quality of events and the enthusiasm of the youth of The Hills to get involved in the activities on offer.

“This year’s Youth Week activities were the best I have ever seen in The Hills,” he said.

“Each of the events I attended were full to capacity and incredibly well received by our Shire’s youth. I loved seeing so many young skaters and female skaters leading the way during the Totem workshop at Balcombe Heights Skate Park. Young residents from all backgrounds came to participate in the Basketball Competition and engage with the Castle Hill Police and Youth Rezolutions. Perhaps most impressive of all was the massive turnout of our rural school students at all three days of the school holiday activities in South Maroota,” he added.

Mayor Gangemi said the community organisations that support youth in The Hills were to be congratulated on their involvement.

“A heartfelt thank you to those organisations that got behind Youth Week and made it great – we truly appreciate the important work you do on a daily basis to support the young people who represent the future of our Shire,” he said.

“Community groups enrich our society and it was great to have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the value they are adding in the youth space.

“I’m looking forward to next year’s Youth Week, and commend everyone involved in making this year’s event happen,” Mayor Gangemi added.
