Camden Council is shining a light on Narellan, after accepting $1 million in grant funding at last night’s Ordinary Meeting that will help deliver lighting, improved amenities and public art along Elyard Street.
Council accepted the funding from Transport for New South Wales under the Safer Cities: Her Way 2 Program, a collaborative partnership program that supports local councils to deliver projects that aim to improve the perception of safety in public spaces and transport hubs for everyone, particularly women, girls and gender diverse people when walking, cycling or accessing public transport.
The funding will facilitate design and construction of improved lighting, upgraded bus stops and public art in the Elyard Street precinct. The project will involve extensive consultation and involvement from the community, with the final scope to be co-designed by community following a series of workshop and “walkshops”.
The upcoming consultation will allow Council to understand the experience of women, girls and gender diverse people in public spaces and integrate these into our design making a real difference locally.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said the funding would help create a more inclusive and vibrant public space for the community.
“This investment is about creating places where everyone feels safe, comfortable and confident to walk, catch public transport and spend time, no matter the time of day,” Cr Fedeli said.
“By working directly with our community throughout the design process, we’ll be able to deliver meaningful improvements that respond to local experiences and enhance the way people use and enjoy the Elyard Street precinct.
“I’d like to thank Minister for Roads, The Hon. Jenny Aitchison MP for the grant and Member for Camden, Mrs Sally Quinnell MP, for her support.”
