2021 Subject Rankings

I am so pleased to write to you to provide details of our 2021 Subject Rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE). These rankings aim to provide an overview of the best places in the world to study a chosen discipline. A record 1,512 institutions are ranked in the 2021 Subject Rankings across the 11 subject areas, with 522 newly ranked this year.

Our University has strongly performed this year. Relative to our fellow Australian institutions we have risen in six of the eleven subject areas. Showing the greatest improvement is Psychology where we’ve risen from 19th nationally to 14th. Arts and Humanities, Clinical and Pre-Clinical Health, Computer science, Physical sciences and Social sciences have all moved up the Australian rankings. Congratulations to the academic and teaching teams that contributed to these impressive results.

Our improvements in the THE World University Subject Rankings are indicative of a broader trend for the University of Newcastle. This success shows that the iterative improvements we have been making to our teaching practice and learning experience are having an impact and show that we are a quality institution in which to work and study. This improvement to our teaching and learning will be a central focus of our course optimisation and delivery model from 2021.

We are committed to regional and international academic collaborations, publishing in quality journals and seeking to resolve global problems through collective efforts. Our partnership approach is a key driver of the outstanding student experience we offer across the teaching and learning journey. We are strengthened by our partnerships – with our communities, industry, and our alumni.

This trend will grow over the term of our current Looking Ahead Strategic Plan. Our Academic Excellence Framework will underpin the University’s continued work to establish global gateways for exchange of ideas and solutions.

The table below outlines our overall performance; where we are ranked globally by subject, and where we sit within the Australian context. The THE World Subject Rankings have described Australian universities as continually rising in quality. I’m proud our institution sits within that trajectory in the majority of our ranked subjects. I look forward to continued success across all of our rankings systems and thank you again for the part you have played in our success.
