The Albanese Government has today released the Centre for Population’s 2023 Population Statement providing updated and comprehensive data on Australia’s population.
Our economic plan is all about ensuring Australians are beneficiaries not victims of the shifts shaping our economy.
Understanding the big trends and transitions in our population is vital to building an inclusive and dynamic labour force, laying the foundations for growth, and ensuring we can deliver policies and services to benefit all Australians.
The 2023 Population Statement helps us prepare for the changes and challenges ahead.
The Statement shows Australia’s population growth has recently been supported by higher net overseas migration following the COVID‑19 pandemic and the reopening of international borders.
Net overseas migration is expected to decline back to around pre‑pandemic levels over the next couple of years and population growth is forecast to decline over the medium term, as our population continues to age.
The Government has an ambitious agenda that takes account of these trends, to help improve living standards and build a stronger, more sustainable and more inclusive economy.
We recently released our Migration Strategy and we are taking considered and methodical steps to ensure Australia has a carefully calibrated migration system that works in our economic national interest.
We are also working to improve the liveability of our cities, suburbs and regions including through significant investments in housing supply, a recalibration of the infrastructure pipeline, and substantial investments in Medicare and essential services.
The Government will draw on the 2023 Population Statement to help inform future policy work so we can continue to build a better future for Australia.
