The final stage in the $24 million redevelopment of Town Beach is set to become a reality, with the McGowan Government to invest $3 million into an accessible fishing jetty in Broome.
As part of the WA Recovery Plan, the McGowan Government has allocated $3 million to the Shire of Broome to build a fully accessible 112 metre-long fishing jetty, additional landscaping and other greenspace works.
The jetty, which is strongly supported by key local stakeholders and community groups, will provide easy to access recreation and fishing opportunities for local residents as well as tourists.
The project will maximise local content and Aboriginal employment, providing more work and jobs for local contractors as Broome continues its COVID-19 recovery.
The successful tenderer is expected to be announced in September, with construction anticipated in early 2021.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“The Town Beach precinct is a fantastic development, and this funding for the final stage of works will see the project completed in its entirety.
“The construction of a new fishing jetty off the end of the refurbished groyne will provide much anticipated wheelchair and pram accessible fishing facilities for the community.
“Alongside the very well used playground, the jetty is set to become a very popular part of the Town Beach precinct and an important community facility.”
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“Delivery of this project will provide another opportunity for local contractors in the COVID-19 recovery phase.
“We are working closely with the Shire of Broome to maximise local jobs and Aboriginal employment, ensuring the contract delivers as much economic benefit to the local area as possible.”
