The life of a Councillor gets pretty busy and there aren’t many days where there isn’t a commitment or obligation to fulfill. Imagine my surprise, where I had a few days in a row that were free. Added bonus – it was in school holidays so that meant mid-week sleepovers with my granddaughter.

The first thing I did was to peruse the jam-packed schedule of school holidays activities that shire staff painstakingly prepares every term break. I booked my granddaughter in and on Thursday last week, Oma and Matilda ventured off on bicycles to the Central Goldfields Art Gallery for a ‘Patch Making Workshop’.

When the redevelopment of the Art Gallery was planned, one key consideration was the inclusion of a children’s arts space. This area with the round window, has come up a treat and is the usual space for children’s workshops. Imagine my surprise though, when we were actually in the Engine Room, surrounded by the latest Golden Textures exhibition. It was quite surreal and a wonderful way to get inspired to make a felt patch.

After everyone was finished, the instructor, local artist Jennifer Latch, put the patches together to make a mini patchwork blanket! We then walked around the exhibition and voted for our favourite contemporary art quilt in the people’s choice award. What a great morning. Many thanks to the staff and volunteers for your dedication to inspire creativity amongst some of the Shire’s youngest residents.

School holiday activities will run ’till the end of this week. Details of what, where and if bookings are required can be found on Council’s Facebook page and website at www.centralgoldfields.vic.gov.au/winterfun2023
