$500,000 to empower community organisations

Not-for-profit organisations will have access to more than $500,000 to help people in the City of Melbourne strengthen their social connections with the community.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said the City of Melbourne will provide grants of up to $20,000 for projects and initiatives that help diverse communities thrive within the municipality.
“It’s crucial that Melburnians have support systems in place and strong connections to their community, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is why we are providing much-needed funding to local not-for-profit organisations,” the Lord Mayor said.
“These grants allow organisations to put people first and respond directly to local needs and issues – creating a safer, fairer and more inclusive community, which is one of the six Strategic Objectives in our new four year Council Plan.
“One example of a fantastic project is Girls Leading Change – a project funded last year that connects young multicultural women with mentorship opportunities and workshops, while promoting a sense of belonging.
“Whether you run a youth organisation in Carlton, a community garden in Kensington or a service supporting rough sleepers in the CBD – we know supporting your community is at the heart of everything you do.”
The Council’s community grants scheme has previously funded projects to deliver mental health aid online, increase young people’s involvement in sports, and combat social isolation for seniors.
Health, Wellbeing and Belonging Portfolio Lead Councillor Dr Olivia Ball said the grants aim to increase community connection, social inclusion and access.
“We know that ties to our community and a sense of belonging are important for health and wellbeing,” Cr Dr Ball said.
“We want to ensure our community members are equipped with the tools they need to thrive. The projects funded will help Melburnians overcome access barriers to many local services including sports clubs, cultural groups and educational programs.”
Funding applications for projects taking place in 2022 in the City of Melbourne are open from Monday 9 August to Monday 13 September.
