A Christmas Island man has been sentenced to four years and four months jail today (Friday, 8 May) in the Western Australia District Court for six child abuse-related offences involving a young girl.
The 59-year-old man had pleaded guilty to two counts of indecently dealing with a child under-13, three counts of indecently recording a child under-13 and one count of possessing child exploitation material in February (2020), his first opportunity to enter a plea.
He had been arrested in November (2019) by Australian Federal Police after a relative of the young girl contacted authorities with concerns about the behaviour of the man.
The allegations were then referred to the Western Australia Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (WA JACET), which comprises AFP and WA Police Force investigators.
Police seized electronic devices, including a mobile phone and a computer, from the man’s home and a digital forensic examination uncovered sexually explicit photographs of the young girl.
The devices also contained sexually explicit images of other young girls, including content depicting girls engaged in sexual acts.
The man will be eligible for parole after two years and four months.
He is subject to a lifetime restraining order in relation to the child victim.
