Work is about to start on the largest ever upgrade to Albury’s modern courthouse, a project that will deliver an additional multipurpose courtroom and other new facilities.
Member for Albury, Justin Clancy, said the $6.4 million upgrade will expand the number of courtrooms at the Olive Street complex from two to three.
“Our courthouse is one of the busiest in regional NSW and I am pleased we are through the planning phase and we are breaking ground on this important project,” Mr Clancy said.
“Adding another courtroom will help manage growing demand for court services in our city and ensure the complex serves the community for many years to come.”
Attorney General Mark Speakman said the upgrade will also deliver:
- A new magistrate’s chambers, courtroom communications room and jury assembly room.
- Refurbishments to the sheriff’s area, two AVL suites and remote witness room.
- Upgraded security access between the existing courthouse and police station.
“The multi-million-dollar upgrade is in addition to the $514,000 upgrade undertaken in 2020 as part of the NSW Government’s $148 million package to appoint seven extra District Court judges,” Mr Speakman said.
“The project will be a major boost for the region, with a local contractor, Joss Construction, winning the tendering process.
“This project is a win-win for Albury – boosting the functionality of Albury Courthouse, increasing its lifespan and creating work in the city.”
In 2020, Albury’s heritage courthouse on Dean Street was also given a spruce up as part of the NSW Government’s $9 million COVID stimulus program to boost regional economies.
