85 charged with drug-related offences at Field Day 2022, NSW

NSW Police Force have charged 85 people with drug-related offences at a New Year’s Day music festival in Sydney yesterday.

The Central Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad (RES) conducted a high-visibility police operation at Field Day 2022 yesterday (Saturday 1 January 2022), with assistance from officers from across the Central Metropolitan Region, the Dog Unit, Licensing Police, and the Police Transport Command.

The operation targeted anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related crime, and illegal drug use, to ensure the safety of festivalgoers.

During the operation, police detected and seized a number of drugs with assistance from the Dog Unit, including MDMA, ketamine, psilocin (mushrooms), LSD, cocaine and cannabis.

An estimated 11,981 people attended the festival with 85 arrested and charged with drug-related offences – 81 for possession and two for supply.

Among them was a 22-year-old man who was allegedly found with 50 capsules of MDMA after being detected by the Dog Unit.

During the search of the man, he allegedly struggled with police causing a senior constable to suffer minor injuries.

He was arrested and taken to Day Police Station where he was charged with supply prohibited drug, assault police, and resist arrest.

The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Sunday 2 January 2022).
