Brimbank Council has taken a step forward with plans to revitalise Alfrieda Street in St Albans, following the awarding of the contract to TDL Contractors Pty Ltd to create a new civic plaza.
Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou said the $1.4 million civic plaza development would become an important and valued community space for the people of St Albans.
‘Following the success of the pop-up park set up in mid-2017, and calls from traders and residents for a civic plaza in Alfrieda Street, St Albans – Council is thrilled to now offer a permanent solution.
‘This exciting project will turn the former bus interchange in Alfrieda Street into a vibrant and welcoming space for the community to share in events, and for people to socialise and relax while shopping.
‘Once complete, the community will have access to a multi-use civic space in the centre of St Albans, providing an area for larger cultural events and safer and inviting spaces for social gatherings.
‘The works will include new road surfacing, feature paving to the footpaths, tree planting and landscaping, improved seating and lighting, better signage, and a new raised pedestrian crossing.
‘I’m thrilled we are now at the stage where construction is to commence in early 2020.
‘The project is a win for residents and a great opportunity to revitalise the popular St Albans Town Centre,’ Cr Papafotiou said.
Prior to commencement of works, Council will inform local business operators of the works and ensure that appropriate access to their premises is maintained during the construction period.
The contract decision was approved by Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting held on 19 November 2019. The decision was taken following a tender process in which TDL Contractors Pty Ltd was evaluated as the preferred tenderer for the tendered amount of $1,403,021 (excluding GST).
The civic plaza development will be funded through Council’s 2019/2020 capital works budget. The project has also received $125,000 from the Level Crossing Removal Authority.
