A revitalised Training and Skills Commission has been announced as part of a Marshall Liberal Government commitment to enhance skills and workforce development, by providing industry with a strengthened voice.
Minister for Industry and Skills, David Pisoni said a refreshed Commission will commence on 1 January next year, to include leaders from key industries such as Defence, aerospace, IT and cybersecurity construction, mining and energy.
“These roles will represent the new Industry Skills Councils (ISC) who’ll provide direct feedback from the very industries seeking skilled staff needed to grow and deliver more jobs in South Australia,” he said.
“With recent announcements to establish the National Space Agency in Adelaide’s Lot Fourteen at the old RAH site, and the Whyalla steelworks being revitalised with a $600 million upgrade, there’s never been a better time for apprenticeships and traineeships growth in South Australia.
“The 11-member Commission with the leadership of Michael Boyce and Adrienne Nieuwenhuis, who have accrued decades of experience between them, in the vocational education, training and higher education sectors, will play a vital role in linking industry with these highly-sought skills.
“Eight Commission members will also chair new Industry Skills Councils, to provide a direct link between industry and government, ensuring funding for skills and training is directly aligned to industry priorities.”
Minister Pisoni said expressions of interest are now open for individuals from industry, businesses, peak bodies and the public to nominate as volunteer Industry Skills Councils members.
“ISC members will provide an important link to help realise the Skilling South Australia initiative to create 20,800 apprentices and trainees over the next four years,” he said.
“It will mean better engagement on broader skills and training policy.”
The Skilling South Australia initiative involves a $100 million investment with a further $103 million from the Federal Government under the Skilling Australians Fund National Partnership Agreement, to create 20,800 apprenticeships and traineeships over four years.
Nominations for volunteer members to the Industry Skills Councils are being sought for the following industry sectors:
- Agribusiness
- Construction, mining and energy
- Creative industries, business and digital platforms
- Defence, aerospace, IT and cybersecurity
- Education and service sector
- Food, wine, tourism and hospitality
- Health, disability, aged care and community services
- Transport and manufacturing.
