A wave of energy for King Island, Tasmania

The Liberal National Government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), is investing $4 million into a wave energy technology trial in Tasmania.

Wave Swell Energy Limited is installing a pilot-scale 200 kilowatt wave energy converter off the coast of King Island.

The $12.3 million project harnesses the rise and fall of water levels to generate electricity.

The wave energy converter will be integrated with the existing King Island microgrid operated by Hydro Tasmania. In 2011, the King Island microgrid received $6 million in ARENA funding.

Wave energy is at an early demonstration stage, but has potential uses in remote coastal and island locations.

Federal Member for Braddon, Gavin Pearce welcomed the announcement saying Tasmania is leading the way in renewable energy development.

“This investment in King Island wave technology is another great example of our region leveraging off its natural assets.”

“Wave Energy is a natural fit for King Island and I’m excited to see the benefits this funding in research and development will have for the Island and the provision of reliable, clean energy for the region.”
