Queensland Corrective Services is investigating the circumstances surrounding an accidental discharge of a firearm during Custodial Officer Entry Program (COEP) training yesterday which resulted in injury to a recruit.
The recruit was one of four receiving live fire instruction from three firearms instructors from the QCS academy at the time of the incident.
Initial advice is that the recruit accidentally discharged their firearm while removing it from the holster during training at the QCS firing range at Wacol.
It appears a single round injured the recruit’s calf.
The recruit completed the live firing exercise before informing instructors of the injury, at which time first aid treatment was provided and QAS called.
The recruit was transported to hospital for testing and treatment. They were due to be discharged from hospital after further treatment.
The incident was reported to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland, and officers from the Operational Inspection and Major Incident Review Group, Professional Standards and Governance Command attended the range to undertake a review of the incident.
The injured officer has been supported by senior officers, and officers who were present during the incident were reminded of support available under the employee support service.
