Accommodating range of values in Tarkine 23 January 2024

Tas Labor

The Tasmanian Minerals, Manufacturing & Energy Council’s Tarkine: It’s been working campaign is an important step to ensuring the region can continue to accommodate a wide range of values.

The Tarkine is an amazing and diverse region with some of the best wilderness in the world, as well as culture, heritage and a strong history of industry.

As well as being a wonderful example of world class wilderness, the West Coast is an economic powerhouse and provides so much in terms of jobs and output for the economy.

Unfortunately, the value of the region’s economic contribution and the ability for industry to co-exist with wilderness values has been overshadowed by misinformation from an increasingly powerful protest industry.

My great uncle Jos Hancock spent most of his life living and mining osmiridium in the middle of the area protestors claim is untouched wilderness.

The region has shown that it can accommodate a range of values over 150 years, and there’s room for that to continue.
