Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith has announced a further extension of the ACT Public Health Emergency for 90 days, effective until 17 February 2021.
This decision has been made based on the advice of the ACT Chief Health Officer and recognises the ongoing threat of COVID-19 in Australia.
The extension of the emergency declaration will enable the Chief Health Officer to continue to take appropriate action, or give any direction, necessary to protect Canberrans from COVID-19.
The unfolding situation in South Australia is another reminder that this pandemic is not over and is an example of how quickly things can change. While we remain in a good position in the ACT, it is likely we will continue to see cases and clusters of COVID-19 across the country.
The reality is that this virus will be part of our lives until a vaccine is widely available. While there has been promising news on that front in recent days, responding appropriately to outbreaks will be important for the foreseeable future as we learn to live with COVID-19.
We will continue to take a cautious, measured approach to protect the health and safety of Canberrans.
This has been a very challenging year for our community and Canberrans have shown great resilience in responding to the challenges presented by COVID-19.
To keep our community safe, we must not be complacent. We must remain vigilant and continue to practise the COVID safe behaviours we have all learnt – keep your physical distance, practice good hand hygiene, stay at home if you are unwell and get tested for any COVID-19 symptoms.
