Councillors recommended approving the draft Active Recreation Strategy for public exhibition at the Lake Macquarie City Council Standing Committee meeting on Monday 11 March.
The strategy aims to guide the future provision of open spaces, facilities, and initiatives to support participation in active recreation for health and wellbeing.
Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the strategy could be a game-changer for the city’s active spaces and recognised the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
“Our city is filled with outstanding swim centres, beaches, playgrounds, parks and sporting ovals –this strategy aims to utilise these spaces more and expand on them into the future,” she said.
Councillors also recommended approving a donation of $1500 for not-for-profit organisation Mums’ Cottage.
“This organisation provides relief to individuals and families in Lake Macquarie, offering a sense of community and companionship during difficult times,” Cr Fraser said.
“It’s wonderful to see charity and not-for-profit organisations doing amazing things in the community.”
Councillors recommended adopting the revised contribution model for community, recreation and childcare facilities, which aims to ensure equitable distribution of leasing costs.
The proposed model, which has been reviewed every five years, considers factors such as facility size, age, and community organisations’ capacities to generate income.
Councillors also approved construction of a new dwelling and associated retaining walls at 24 Chardonnay Court, Eleebana.
The new three-storey dwelling will reach a maximum height of 10.06m.
