Additional 14 charges to be laid on driver over Oatlands crash, NSW

Police will lay additional charges at court today following further inquiries into a crash that killed four children at Oatlands earlier this year.

Just before 8pm on Saturday 1 February 2020, emergency services were called to Bettington Road, Oatlands, following reports multiple pedestrians had been struck by a vehicle.

Police have been told the children were on the footpath when a Mitsubishi Triton utility allegedly mounted the kerb and struck the children.

Four children – three girls, aged 8, 11, and 12, and a 13-year-old boy – died at the scene.

An 11-year-old boy and two girls, aged 10 and 13, were also injured and underwent treatment at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

The 29-year-old male driver was charged with multiple offences and has been remanded in custody to re-appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Thursday 2 April 2020).

Following further inquiries, including forensic examinations, officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit will lay a further 14 charges at court, including:

• Four counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – influence of drug or drugs (MDMA)

• Four counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death – speed more than 45km/h over limit

• Aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – influence of drug (MDMA)

• Aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – speed more than 45km/h over limit

• Drive vehicle, illicit drug present in blood (Cocaine)

• Drive vehicle, illicit drug present in blood (MDMA)

• Proceed through red traffic light

• Not give particulars to police.
