Aggravated assault in Darwin

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 35-year-old man following the alleged aggravated assault of a 37-year-old woman in Darwin CBD.

A police CCTV operator witnessed the man assaulting the female in the Smith Street Mall around 10:30pm last night.

Darwin General Duties and Dog Operations Unit (DOU) officers responded to the incident and located the victim and offender. The offender then fled the scene and disappeared in the vicinity of Bennett Street.

Patrol Dog (PD) Lupo was deployed and was able to track down the offender who was found hiding near Brown’s Mart. The victim was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital.

DOU’s Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dunlop said, “This behaviour is unacceptable. The quick apprehension by PD Lupo and his handler is a testament to Lupo’s tracking skills which subsequently removed the offender from our streets before he could cause further harm to the community.”

The offender has been charged with one count of aggravated assault.
