The City of Greater Geelong will host a candlelight vigil at Johnstone Park on Friday 23 October, joining a number of vigils being organised across Australia bringing the community together for a moment of reflection following the horrific attack on Helen Haines, the independent federal Member for Indi.
The vigil will take place at 8pm in the hard-court area of Johnstone Park, with City Hall illuminated in solidarity with Helen and communities across the country coming together in reflection.
The gathering will also provide an opportunity to acknowledge the broader issue of aggression, intimidation and violence directed at women, particularly those in politics and public life.
Councillor Emma Sinclair:
Everyone should be able to participate in public life, represent their communities and contribute to public debate without fear of violence or intimidation.
This vigil is an opportunity for our community to stand in solidarity with Helen Haines, reflect on the impact of this attack and recognise the importance of ensuring women feel safe to participate in public life.
We invite people to come together in a spirit of respect, reflection and support for everyone affected.
