Air conditioner upgrade saves millions

Households wanting to upgrade or install new air conditioners can get discounts of up to $1000 under a NSW Government plan designed to increase the number of energy efficient units in the marketplace.

Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said this investment, from the NSW Government’s Climate Change Fund initiative, will reduce the load on the electricity system and reduce household power bills.

“The program is expected to return a statewide power bill saving of around $20 million and reduce the generation load by 90,000 megawatt hours,” she said.

“A discount of between $200-1000 off the installation price is available when households or small businesses buy a high-efficiency air conditioner through an approved installer.

“It does not matter if you are buying an air conditioner for the first time or upgrading an old system, you will get a NSW Government discount.

“For example, replacing a two star five kilowatt unit with a modern efficient five star unit, could save around $675 in power bills over the air conditioner’s lifetime.

“The NSW Government also wants to encourage people installing units for the first time to buy the most energy efficient models.

“We expect 15,000 households and small businesses will have done this by May 2020.

The discounts are part of the Energy saver – Household and Small Business Upgrade Program.

A program delivery partner has been selected by competitive tender to ensure the program is delivered efficiently across NSW and offers value for money.

Systems can be new or replacement and split, ducted or multi-split systems that meet the criteria are eligible.

The incentive program was announced by Premier Gladys Berejiklian in September 2017 as part of the $118 million Energy Affordability Package to help households and small businesses save energy and money.

All households and most small businesses in New South Wales are eligible for the program and can contact an approved installer through the Energy saver website.
