Albanese Government launches Low Earth Orbit Satellite Working Group

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

An innovative new working group established by the Albanese Government to examine the future role of satellite technology in delivering telecommunications services will meet for the first time today in Sydney.

This first meeting will hear from industry participants on their use of satellite technology and opportunities for future growth – particularly in rural and regional communities. The Government expects the Working Group to provide advice and feedback on possible regulatory reforms to support the industry.

The initial Working Group meeting will include representatives from across the low earth orbit satellite and telecommunications sector, as well as representation from relevant government agencies and First Nations peoples.

There has been significant uptake of LEO satellite technology in recent years, with satellites already delivering internet connectivity across Australia.

The Government first announced the formation of the Working Group in October last year.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP:
