Allens advises EnergyCo on world’s most powerful battery

Allens has advised the Energy Corporation of New South Wales (EnergyCo) on the appointment of Akaysha Energy to develop the largest standby network battery in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Waratah Super Battery will mitigate wholesale electricity price spikes, reliability issues and broader economic impacts, placing downward pressure on the wholesale electricity market price.

‘We are delighted to have been able to support EnergyCo with the delivery of what is expected to be the most powerful battery in the world,’ said lead Partner Kate Axup.

‘This is a critical piece of infrastructure for the state of New South Wales, and the first to be delivered under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap. It is a key step in the move towards ensuring a stable and secure power grid as coal-fired power stations retire.’

Akaysha Energy will develop the 850 MW / 1680 MWh battery at the former Munmorah Power Station site at Colongra, with 700 MW / 1400 MWh of that capacity reserved to respond to, and stabilise, disturbances on the NSW transmission network that will be signalled by a centralised control system operated by Transgrid. Construction on the battery is expected to commence by April 2023, and has a target operational date of March2025.
