Southern Cross University’s Indigenous Events Coordinating Committee is proud to support NAIDOC organisers in celebrating and acknowledging a history that dates back thousands of generations.
NAIDOC Week 2020 at Southern Cross University runs from 8 – 15 November. The theme for the North Coast region is hearing, seeing and learning about those who have cared for this country for more than 65,000 years.
This year offers a busy program including popular online workshops to help understand some of the local languages from the University’s campus regions including Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr and Yugambeh.
Guided by local Elders, participants will learn how to pronounce words that relate to places, animals and body parts.
“Unfortunately, COVID restrictions limit the number of people who can join the workshops but there are many other events that are also being hosted online,” said Janine Dunleavy from Gnibi College of Indigenous Australian Peoples.
“We invite you to register and link with community events for what promises to be a diverse and fascinating week of NAIDOC activities.”

The University is also co-hosting a special Thursday Night Live! edition to celebrate NAIDOC, facilitated by Koori Mail General Manager Naomi Moran. Naomi will be joined by Elders Uncle Rob Bryant, Uncle Des Williams, Uncle Herb Roberts, Aunty Robyne Bancroft and Aunty Gwen Hickling, as they share their stories of connection to Country, culture, and community, addressing the theme for NAIDOC 2020 – Always Was, Always Will Be.
Thursday Night Live! is an evening of provocation, discussion and dialogue, a partnership event of Southern Cross University and the Lismore Regional Gallery.
