Another housing boost for our regional communities

Nic Street, Minister for Housing and Construction

The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on our long-term plan and doing what matters by increasing social housing in regional communities.

There are 18 brand new two-bedroom units being developed by Centacare Evolve Housing in Triabunna which will be used to house priority applicants from the Housing Register.

Minister for Housing and Construction, Nic Street, said that the Rockliff Liberal Government’s support for Tasmania’s regions has never been stronger.

“This is a significant build for the community of Triabunna with the total cost for the build estimated at $4.32 million and our Government investing $2.52 million towards the build,” Minister Street said.

“The units are being built on land owned by Homes Tasmania which was purchased from the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council, this will ensure their ongoing use as social housing for at least 40 years.

“It’s fantastic to be working hand-in-hand with local governments and community housing providers so we can continue to deliver what matters most for Tasmanians.

“Each unit is being built to the Silver Level of the Livable Housing Design Guidelines, meaning the properties ensure future flexibility and adaptability to avoid more costly modifications in future.”

Liberal Member for Windermere, Nick Duigan, was onsite today to see firsthand the progress underway on this important development.

“We know our regional towns are the backbone of Tasmania and they are places where people want to live. We strongly recognise that demand for social housing is not confined to our major population centres,” Minister Duigan said.

“Which is why it fills me with considerable pride to be standing here knowing that these homes are going to make a significant difference for Tasmanians living in our regions.

“I want to congratulate Centacare Evolve Housing and all stakeholders involved for their efforts to ensure that no matter where Tasmanians live, they can have a safe, secure and affordable roof over their head.”

The Rockliff Liberal Government is committed to providing more safe, appropriate and affordable housing and this includes ensuring the next milestone in our 20 year Strategy’s first Action Plan 2023-2027: to deliver 2,000 more social homes by 2027.

The units are being built by St Joseph Affordable Homes and are due to be completed in November 2024.
