Another massive year delivering infrastructure for Tasmanians

Michael Ferguson,Minister for Infrastructure and Transport

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering on the 2020-21 State Budget to invest in communities, increase business confidence and support Tassie jobs, and despite it being early in the construction season, we’ve already completed nine road projects.

This is on top of the 38 projects completed last financial year, which was State Roads’ biggest delivery year in a decade.

Since 2014, we have completed more than 150 separate road and bridge projects, including upgrades right across the state to major highways, roads that support our visitor economy, and bridge replacement and strengthening projects.

We are continuing this momentum with our landmark $5 billion infrastructure program over four years to stimulate the economy as we recover and rebuild.

Already this construction season, we’ve completed:

  • Three sections of the Midland Highway;
  • The Mowbray Connector;
  • Intersection upgrades at Invermay;
  • Upgrades on the Huon Highway;
  • Upgrades to the Lyell Highway;
  • Upgrades on the Bass Highway; and
  • Upgrades to Gordon River Main Road.

This is just the beginning of what is shaping up to be a massive construction season across Tasmania, being delivered in partnership with our civil construction industry.

Work is continuing on our 10 Year Midland Highway Action Plan, with the Perth Links completed and the final stages tendered and underway.

Construction is well underway on the Hobart Airport Interchange, and preliminary works are commencing on the Midway Point intersection upgrade.

Works are starting on our $14 million West Tamar Highway Priority Projects, and the $2 million upgrade of the Pub With No Beer corner on Highland Lakes Road is underway.

Construction workers are currently completing the upgrade of Richmond Road, with works underway between Malcolms Hut Road and Grasstree Hill Road, and upgrades to Mudwalls Road continuing.

Resurfacing and other safety upgrade projects are also rolling out across the state right now, and there’s even more work in the pipeline, with 16 road projects either open for tender or awaiting contract awarding.

We will continue to deliver infrastructure to make Tasmania’s roads safer and improve travel time reliability, while supporting our civil construction industry, boosting confidence and supporting Tassie jobs.
