Antisocial Behaviour Patrols – Operation Nehammer

Northern Territory Police have been conducting weekly operations to combat antisocial behaviour in the greater Darwin area.

Operation Nehammer was established last month with the specific aim to target antisocial behaviour and minimise alcohol fuelled violence by reducing secondary supply.

The initiative combines teams from Darwin, Casuarina and Palmerston social order, and also involves external agencies, including local councils, Larrakia Nation and public transport and housing safety.

Areas targeted last week included Karama, Nightcliff, Casuarina and Palmerston CBD.

For the week ending Thursday 26 May 2022:

  • 175 litres of alcohol were tipped out
  • 320 people were moved on
  • 38 people were taken into protective custody, inclusive of taking people home, sobering up shelter, hospital and the watch house.

Acting Sergeant Theo Karamanidis said, “The operation has had a significant effect on antisocial behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence around Darwin.

“Operation Nehammer will continue to run for the foreseeable future and NT Police will continue to combat alcohol fuelled violence in all its forms.”
