Appeal after elderly man threatened during break and enter at Newcastle, NSW

Police are appealing for information after an elderly man was threatened during an aggravated break and enter in Newcastle this morning.

About 4.20am (Friday 8 April 2022), emergency services were called to Fussell Street, Birmingham Gardens, following reports four males had forced entry to a home and threatened the elderly occupant with a hockey stick.

Police have been told the 77-year-old man was threatened before his Kia Cerato was stolen. He was not injured.

Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As part of those inquiries, police located four males standing next to a Kia on Mordue Parade, Jesmond, about 6.10am (Friday 8 April 2022), before they fled the scene.

After a short foot pursuit, one male – aged 16 – was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station.

Despite a search of the area, the other three males were not located.

As inquiries continue, police have released descriptions of three males they believe may be able to assist with their investigations.

Two of the males are described as being of Caucasian appearance and wearing black hoodies.

A third male is described as being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance and wearing a grey hoodie.
