Appeal for safer driving

After a shocking year on the city’s roads, Logan City Council is urging motorists to slow down and keep their eyes on the road.

Fifteen lives have been lost on Logan’s roads this year with the majority of victims being young men in single-vehicle accidents.

Three lives have been lost in the last month alone.

The call comes at the start of National Road Safety Week (NRSW) where drivers are being urged to adopt better driving habits and encourage others to do so.

“It appears the Fatal Five have been factors in every crash in Logan this year,” City Infrastructure Chair Councillor Teresa Lane said.

“Although environmental factors can play a part in crashes, it is the behaviours of motorists that decides the severity of accidents.

“If you know someone who uses their phone while driving, who drives while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or who may have a lead foot then please have a talk to them – it may just save their life or the life of someone you love.

“Driving is a privilege but it comes with responsibility. We all need to play a role in making sure our friends, work mates and family know how we feel when it comes to road safety and driving behaviours.”

Cr Lane said road safety is even more important with the Christmas holiday period just around the corner.

The ‘Fatal Five’ are speeding, drink driving, distracted driving (mobile phones), fatigue and not wearing a seatbelt.

NRSW is an initiative of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways group, other road safety organisations and government.

This year drivers are being urged to take the pledge to drive as though their loved ones are on the road.
