Appeal to locate 88-year-old man living with dementia, missing from Shoal Bay

Police are appealing for public assistance to locate an elderly man missing from the Shoal Bay area.

Sydney “Max” Stewart, aged 88, was last seen in Shoal Bay about 2.30pm today (Thursday 30 July 2026).

When he was unable to be located or contacted, officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were notified and commenced inquiries into his whereabouts.

Family and police have serious concerns for Max’s welfare as he lives with dementia.

Max is described as being of Caucasian appearance, 175cm, thin build, white hair, and is clean-shaven.

When last seen he was wearing jeans, a blue checked shirt, grey jacket and a fedora-style hat.

Max is known to frequent the Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay and Fingal Bay areas.
