ARC funded researchers recognised at the 2021 PM’s Prizes for Science

The Australian Research Council (ARC) congratulates all the recipients of the 2021 Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, including those whose outstanding research has received funding support from the Australian Government through the ARC.

The PM’s Prizes for Science are Australia’s most prestigious awards for outstanding achievements in scientific research, research-based innovation and excellence in science teaching.

“On behalf of the ARC, I extend congratulations to all recipients, recognised for their extraordinary contributions to Australian research and innovation, and for the impact that their research endeavours are creating,” said ARC Chief Executive Officer, Professor Sue Thomas.

  • Professor Edward Holmes received the Prime Minister’s Prize for Science for his transformative role in the response to COVID-19, and his ground-breaking research into the evolution of viral diseases. The ARC is proud to have supported his research as an ARC Australian Laureate Fellow, and through several ARC Discovery and Linkage Program grants. Professor Holmes’ research was also featured in the ARC’s annual publication Making a difference: Outcomes of ARC supported research 2020-21.
  • Professor Anthony Weiss AM received the Prime Minister’s Prize for Innovation for his pioneering research and commercialisation of synthetic tropoelastin-based biomaterials, which can accelerate and improve the repair of human tissue. The ARC is proud to have supported his research through an ARC Discovery Program grant.
  • Associate Professor Michael Bowen received the Prize for New Innovators for his ground-breaking discovery and development of KNX100, a novel molecule that is now being commercialised to help treat addiction and other disorders of the brain and mind. The ARC is proud to have supported his research through various ARC Discovery and Linkage Program grants.

“These remarkable researchers are making leading contributions towards the advancement of science and research in Australia and delivering tangible benefits to Australians and the world.

“I am delighted their efforts and dedication have been recognised through these awards and proud that the ARC has supported their important research,” said Professor Thomas.
