Selected works from Campaspe Shire Council’s art collection will be showcased in a new exhibition at Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, offering the community an opportunity to experience the collection through fresh creative responses by local artists.
With more than 300 pieces, Council’s art collection underwent a full audit in 2025 and is currently housed at Kyabram Town Hall Gallery. The exhibition features a curated selection of works from the collection.
Here + There: A Collective Conversation Exhibition is a collaborative project between Council, curator and artist Ellen Lee, and the Kyabram Town Hall Gallery. The exhibition presents a new perspective on the collection through creative responses to selected works by local artists Anne Churches, Ellen Lee, Geraldine Gallivan, John Stevens, Kevin Williams, Linden Lancaster, Maree Santilla, and Sonya Else.
Curator and artist Ellen Lee said the project creates a conversation between the collection and contemporary local artists.
“Including paintings, drawings, pastels, watercolours, and ceramics, the collection varies in both subject matter and medium, presenting a layered reflection of the Campaspe Shire and bringing together stories of place, community, and belonging.
“Here + There presents a series of artistic pairings, cultivating a dialogue between local artists and the collection. Through works that compliment, contrast, or expand on their creative practices, artists were encouraged to engage with works, mediums and approaches beyond their usual scope of practice” she said.
A series of workshops will also accompany the exhibition, giving community members the chance to get involved. Sonya Else will facilitate a textile workshop on Thursday 9 July from 10:30am to 1:30pm, while Auntie Margie Tang will lead a Cultural Exchange Weaving Workshop on 2 August from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Artist Geraldine Gallivan will also facilitate a creative workshop for her local VIVID (disability service provider) community members in collaboration with artist-curator Ellen Lee.
Campaspe Shire Mayor, Cr Daniel Mackrell said the exhibition highlights the value of sharing Council’s art collection with the community.
“This exhibition is a great way to shine a light on the stories and creativity that make our shire unique, while giving locals a chance to see the collection in a fresh and meaningful way.”
Community members are encouraged to visit the exhibition and take part in the accompanying workshops.
