Young people across The Hills Shire can sign-up from today for the opportunity to do an Art Therapy Workshop this Mental Health Month.
Mental Health Month is held throughout October and encourages people to think about the state of their own mental health and the importance of good mental health in everyday life.
The online workshops will be hosted by professional counsellors who will guide participants through creative techniques, such as drawing, painting and collage. Participants will also learn how to express themselves creativity through art and how to decode their emotions and feelings from the works they create.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on us all, especially our young people, who have been impacted by the lockdowns, including the changing rules and restrictions, temporary closure of schools, cancellation of sporting groups and activities, and I’m sure they are missing their school mates and extended family,” Mayor Byrne said.
“All of these changes, along with the fear of catching and spreading the virus can put undue stress on young people.
“That’s why Council is bringing a focus to youth mental health this Mental Health Month. These workshops aim to connect young people to resources and professionals that can help them on their journey to good mental health and wellbeing.
“I’m pleased Council, with the support of the NSW Government, could deliver this meaningful program and I look forward to seeing all the wonderful artworks that are created in these workshops,” Mayor Byrne added.
Art Therapy workshops are available for young people aged 12-15 years and were made possible thanks to funding made available through the Targeted Early Intervention (TEI) program under the NSW Government Department of Communities and Justice.
Workshops will be held on Friday, October 8 and Saturday, October 9.
