AusBiotech welcomes a new report on artificial intelligence (AI) from CSIRO, designed to help those in the science sectors get a greater understanding of AI, how it’s changed and what the future holds for Australia in particular.
CSIRO’s Artificial intelligence for science – adoption trends and future development pathways report has recently been published to help science managers, science organisations and investors understand plausible development pathways for AI.
The report states that health and life sciences are leading the way in the use and development of AI, making up 22 percent and 20 percent respectively of publishing volume of the global research effort, thereby helping to address some of the world’s greatest challenges.
Case studies illustrate the importance of AI in the sector, such as in the case of using deep learning to develop a model to identify drugs for antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
It also highlights the importance of quality data in our sector and predicts these areas are likely to “invest greater effort in developing higher quality and fit-for-purpose data sets”.
Recognising the importance and potential of AI in health, the upcoming AusMedtech 2023, Australia’s premier medical technology conference, will feature discussions and presentations from experts in the field on what AI means for the sector and how to benefit most.
It will also be featured in the upcoming issue Australasian Biotechnology Journal published in April 2023.
