Ashurst advises WaterNSW on pumped hydro project

Global law firm Ashurst has advised WaterNSW on the development agreement for the new Phoenix Pumped Hydro project at Burrendong Dam as part of WaterNSW’s Renewable Energy Storage Program (RESP). Up to 400,000 NSW households could be powered by the renewable electricity generated by the project.

WaterNSW is a state-owned corporation that operates and maintains large dams across NSW. The pumped hydro project at Burrendong Dam will provide 810MW of capacity and storage for up to 12 continuous hours of electricity generation. The project will operate independently of WaterNSW operations and is planned to be delivered by 31 December 2029.

Partner Gareth Sage commented:

“WaterNSW’s Renewable Energy and Storage Program encourages private sector investment in renewable energy storage projects by leveraging WaterNSW’s land and assets. We are proud to have advised WaterNSW on this significant milestone in in this innovative program.”

The Ashurst team was led by Gareth Sage, who was assisted by counsel Melinda Harris and Ben Kipic, and associate Dan Trevanion (Transport and infrastructure).
