Assault police – East Arnhem Region

Northern Territory Police are investigating a large disturbance at an airstrip in a remote community yesterday.

While conducting a search of the aircraft, a crowd of approximately 60 gathered at the airstrip. A number of people allegedly began throwing rocks at officers.

One officer required treatment at the local clinic for minor injuries.

Officers seized approximately three ounces of cannabis secreted on the plane. Five male passengers were issued drug infringements. Further investigations are continuing.

Commander Janelle Tonkin said, “Assaults upon our officers are completely unacceptable and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators. The fact that this incident was over such a small amount of cannabis is outrageous. The trafficking of illicit substances into vulnerable communities causes significant and long lasting harm, there is no excuse for it and you will be prosecuted. “
