Australia announces new High Commissioner to Malta 11 July

Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Today I announce the appointment of Mr Matt Skelly as Australia’s next High Commissioner to Malta. Mr Skelly will also be accredited to Tunisia.

Australia and Malta enjoy close ties anchored by strong people-to-people links and our shared membership of the Commonwealth.

Australia’s Maltese diaspora community is the largest in the world and continues to make a valuable contribution to Australian society and to our bilateral relationship.

Australia and Malta have shared values, including a long-standing commitment to promoting international peace and the rule of law, maritime security and the strength of multilateral institutions.

Australia welcomes Malta’s membership of the UN Security Council for the 2023-24 term.

Australia looks forward to continuing to work with Malta and other members of the European Union as we look to conclude a comprehensive and ambitious Australia-EU Trade Agreement which will expand trade and investment opportunities between our countries.

Mr Skelly is a career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and was most recently Director of the Eastern Europe and Western Balkans Section.

He has previously served overseas as Deputy Head of Mission in Spain, and in Iraq and South Africa.

I thank outgoing High Commissioner Jenny Cartmill for her contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Malta since 2020.
