A celebration of community spirit and the welcoming of our newest citizens will be at the heart of Monash Council’s Australia Day activities on Sunday 26 January.
The day’s events start at 10am at the Civic Centre, Glen Waverley with a flag raising ceremony and Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Ian Hunter.
Dr Hass Dellal AO, executive director of the Australian Multicultural Foundation and Chairman of SBS, will deliver the Australia Day address.
The first citizenship ceremony of 2020 will take place after the official welcome with 120 Monash residents becoming Australian citizens at the special ceremony.
Mayor Stuart James said he hoped people would join in afterwards for a free community BBQ and entertainment in the Glen Waverley Library forecourt, to include Ruby Ray and the Funky Monkeys who blend toe tapping live music with magic, circus and cultural storytelling.
There is also a live magic show, CaribVic Steelband, face painting and roving entertainment.
From 2.30pm the movie Red Dog, the true story of a loveable dog in the Australian outback, will be shown at the Glen Waverley Library (bookings essential).
“Australia Day in Monash is about recognising our willingness to welcome those who want to make a new life in our country and to celebrate all that is great about Australia,” Cr James said.
“More than ever, given the devastating bushfires that have ravaged our communities, we come together to acknowledge those qualities we hold dear as Australians, the resilience and determination that is part of our character.”
