Australia for UNHCR Chair Michael Dwyer AM officially steps down from the role today after serving on the Board and advocating for refugees for 22 years.

Michael Dwyer has been a leader in the investment and financial sectors for decades. He joined the board in 2000 as a director before being appointed Chair in 2018.

“Michael’s service to Australia for UNHCR and dedication to improving the lives of refugees over decades has been nothing short of extraordinary,” Australia for UNHCR CEO Trudi Mitchell said.

“As an influential advocate for refugees, he has spearheaded support for UNHCR from the investment and financial sectors. Every year, he has galvanized corporate support for our World Refugee Day event, raising vital funds to support the UN Refugee Agency’s work across the world,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Michael will continue to have a role at Australia for UNHCR. He has agreed to become a patron of the organisation, which I’m very pleased about,” she said.

Mr Dwyer is a director of NSW Treasury Corporation (TCorp) and financial technology business Iress. He was formerly the CEO of one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds, First State Super. He also Chairs the boards of Bennelong Funds Management Group Pty Ltd (BFMG) and its subsidiary Bennelong Funds Management Ltd (BFML).

In 2011 Mr Dwyer was named a Member of the Order of Australia for service to the superannuation industry, through his leadership and executive roles, and to the community through Australia for UNHCR.

“It has been an absolute privilege to serve Australia for UNHCR for more than two decades. In the early days we were able to raise a few hundred thousand dollars. This year we’re on track to raise almost $50 million for refugees and displaced people. I’ve seen first-hand how this support changes lives,” Mr Dwyer said.

“I would like to thank all the individuals, corporate donors and philanthropic supporters who continue give generously to refugees and displaced people.”

Professor Peter Shergold AC is the new Chair of Australia for UNHCR after serving on the Board since 2020.

Professor Shergold brings to the role extensive experience in the public sector, academia, not-for-profit governance and company directorships. Most recently, a $2 million scholarship program for refugees and asylum seekers at Western Sydney University was established in Professor Shergold’s name.

“I would like to thank Michael for his incredible contribution over many years,” Professor Shergold said.

“I feel very privileged to be taking on the role of Chair. Like Michael, I am dedicated to improving the lives of refugees and displaced people around the world.”
