Australian Government awards millions for UQ research

Important research projects addressing challenges from skin cancer to traffic injuries at The University of Queensland have been awarded more than $50 million from the Australian Government.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has announced grants for five Centres for Research Excellence (CRE), two Partnership Projects and 29 Investigator Grants in its latest round of funding.

The UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health (HABS) will expand an infectious diseases sentinel surveillance network operating in 32 Aboriginal primary care services.

Professor James Ward said the partnership project would increase the number of sites involved and expand the scope of the network to include surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases.

“In doing this, we are now able to move to the next phase of progressing our surveillance network to one that will simultaneously be focused on driving quality improvement within health services as well as participation in ongoing research all bound up with strong community participation,” he said.

Among five CREs to receive funding at UQ is the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Stillbirth at The Mater Research Institute – UQ.

Professor Vicki Flenady received an Investigator Grant and a grant for a Centre for Research Excellence.

She said the centre aims to reduce stillbirth rates and inequities, and ensure that all women and families receive optimal care when stillbirth or neonatal death does occur.
