The 2022 Top End fire season is fast approaching, with extensive mitigation burning underway across the Northern Territory’s Top End to reduce bushfire risk.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer said, “Both the NT Fire and Rescue Service and Bushfires NT have been conducting public awareness campaigns to help Territorians prepare for the fire season.
“Normal bushfire potential is expected for the northwest Top End, Central Australia and Barkly regions. However, large areas of the Gulf, Victoria River District and the Katherine region will experience above normal bushfire potential.
“Bushfires can affect just about anywhere in the NT. It’s important that you have a bushfire survival plan in place and know exactly what you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property. An unprepared property can put you, your family and your community at risk.
“Ensure you have firebreaks in place to defend your property and to provide access for firefighters.”
It’s up to all Territorians and visitors alike to monitor conditions, know what the Fire Danger Rating is each day and stay connected to local media, radio stations and websites for important information about bushfires.
“Act by keeping informed of Fire Danger Ratings and bushfire advice and warnings, be ready to implement your Bushfire Survival Plan,” said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Fischer.
“Good information will always lead to good decisions. Staying safe requires knowing how to keep informed before and during emergencies.”
