Avalon 2021 postponement

Greater Geelong Mayor Stephanie Asher provided the following statement in response to the announcement on 13 May 2020 from
Avalon International Airshow organisers that the event will be postponed to a
later date in 2021.

Mayor Stephanie Asher:

All event organisers are faced with difficult
decisions at the moment given no one knows exactly when we will fully emerge
from this period of restrictions.

For an event as large and complex as the Avalon
International Airshow, it’s completely understandable that organisers have made
a decision now to postpone from February until later in 2021.

The decision means there is greater certainty
that Avalon 2021 will go ahead, which is particularly important given it will
be a celebration of 100 years of the Royal Australian Air Force.

The council remains committed to supporting
Avalon 2021 via Geelong Major Events funding. It’s an event our community
always looks forward to and is hugely significant for our local economy,
injecting around $28.9 million in 2019. As we recover from the effects of the
COVID-19 pandemic, this economic activity will be vital to our region.

We look forward to working with the Avalon
Airshow team to confirm a new date, and then on making sure Avalon 2021 is as spectacular
and successful an event as ever.
