Toowoomba Regional Council’s Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has met with around 50 residents at a community meeting in Cecil Plains today to provide an update to the ongoing bushfire situation.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Superintendent Wayne Waltisbuhl said the LDMG was doing everything it could to keep the community safe.
“We understand this is a difficult time for residents and our teams are on the ground doing our part to protect everyone,” he said.
“We will continue to monitor the situation and will send out an emergency alert to impacted residents if the conditions worsen.
“There is no current plan to evacuate any residents however, if residents are concerned and would prefer to stay somewhere else temporarily, they’re welcome to do so.”
Toowoomba Region Mayor and Chair of the LDMG Geoff McDonald said the Millmerran Showgrounds was ready to be used as an evacuation centre if needed.
“We want everyone to feel safe which is why we’ve taken this precautionary step,” he said.
“The LDMG is asking residents right across the Region to remain vigilant during this time as an increase bushfire risk remains due to current conditions.
“The emergency services are doing an incredible job and we will continue to support them as best we can.
“The best thing residents can do at this point in time is to stay informed.
“The celebrations for the 125th anniversary of Cecil Plains School will still be going ahead tomorrow as planned.”
