Amazon Web Services (AWS) is opening its second infrastructure region in Australia.
The new AWS Asia Pacific (Melbourne) Region will consist of three Availability Zones when it launches in the second half of 2022. The investment is expected to create 90 jobs over four years.
The new region will enable more developers, startups and enterprises, as well as government, education and non-profit organisations, to run their applications and serve end users from data centres located in Australia.

‘With another AWS Region coming to Asia Pacific, we look forward to helping accelerate these transformations.’
AWS’ customers in Australia include some of the nation’s largest public and private organisations including Atlassian, Australian Bureau of Statistics, Canva, Commonwealth Bank, CSIRO, National Australia Bank, Qantas and Telstra.
Over the last decade, Amazon has invested more than A$3 billion in Australia, including infrastructure and compensation. Amazon established its first infrastructure region in Sydney in 2012, followed by Amazon CloudFront Points of Presence infrastructure in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Amazon currently has four fulfilment centres in Australia. The company opened 10 logistics sites in Australia in 2020, and announced it would open a second fulfilment centre in Melbourne and its first Amazon Robotics fulfilment centre in Sydney. Amazon employs more than 3,000 people across amazon.com.au, AWS, Kindle, Audible, Alexa and Prime Video.
