Waurn Ponds uniform officers couldn’t believe their eyes when they stopped at an intersection in Waurn Ponds today.
Officers observed a black Mazda CX5 at the intersection of Colac Road and South Valley / Pioneer Road about 10.10am, when something unusual caught their eye.
The vehicle was intercepted and when officers approached, they found the driver in the front seat with a young child strapped to his chest in a baby carrier.
The 37-year-old man from Greater Geelong was issued a penalty notice for failing to ensure passenger under 16 years old is appropriately secured.
He received a $407 fine and 3 demerit points.
The young child was placed into the appropriate seat before they carried on their journey.
Officers would like to remind motorists that it is a legal requirement for children to be seated in a child restraint, a booster seat or an adult seatbelt that is properly adjusted and fastened.
The type of restraint to be used depends on the person’s age and size.
- Children under 6 months of age must travel in a rear facing child restraint.
- Children aged 6 months to under 4 years must travel in either a rear facing or forward-facing child restraint.
- Children aged 4 years to under 7 years must travel in either a forward-facing child restraint with an inbuilt harness, or a booster seat.
- Children aged 7 years to under 16 years must travel in either a booster seat or use an adult seatbelt.
- People 16 years and over must be restrained by an adult seat belt.
