From tactical demonstrations to one-on-one conversations, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) provided a unique insight into the diverse and rewarding career opportunities on offer at its annual Careers Open Day.
Held at the Bob Atkinson Operational Capability Centre (BAOCC) in Wacol, attendees explored the training facilities and gained valuable insights into what it takes to embark on a career with the QPS.
Officers from more than 20 specialist units including Water Police, Mounted Unit and Forensic Services Group showcased their capabilities, while instructors demonstrated key aspects of the critical training that equips officers with the skills and knowledge to keep Queensland communities safe.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Brett Pointing APM, said the Careers Open Day offers those considering a policing career valuable insight into the role and the difference they can make in communities across Queensland.
“Queenslanders with a wide range of backgrounds, skills and life experience are exploring what it takes to join the QPS,” Acting Commissioner Pointing said.
“Policing is an opportunity to serve the community, make a meaningful difference, and be part of an organisation guided by integrity, respect and courage.
“We are looking for people who share these values and are ready to stand with us in supporting safer communities.
“Throughout my policing career, I have seen the lasting impact officers can have. For those considering a career in policing, this is an opportunity to be part of something bigger, serve with purpose, and help shape a safer future for Queensland.”
There are currently more than 550 recruits in training at QPS academies in Brisbane and Townville. Since October 2024, more than 1,800 new officers have graduated, strengthening Queensland’s frontline.
For Recruit Nick Nevin, a career in policing provides the perfect opportunity to apply and expand on more than 20 years of experience in emergency medical care and executive protection across South Africa and the Middle East.
“It’s inspiring to work alongside like-minded colleagues, as part of an organisation united by a collective focus to serve the greater good and support the community,” Recruit Nevin said.
“Learning new things is always a challenge, but there’s a lot of support at the academy amongst your colleagues and instructors, who all want to see you succeed.
“My advice to future applicants is to make fitness and resilience training a habit, maintain your interests outside policing so you have a healthy outlet, and stay humble and kind.”
