Bacchus Marsh residents invited to free ‘Your Brain Matters’ information session

Dementia Australia is holding a free “Your Brain Matters” information session for residents living in Bacchus Marsh about how to keep your brain healthy and help reduce the risk of dementia in later life.

Your Brain Matters is a program developed by Dementia Australia based on published research evidence, designed to help participants maintain overall wellbeing, and live a brain healthy life and potentially delay the onset of dementia.

The course provides participants with an opportunity to meet with others who are sharing a similar experience, allowing time to socialise and share important links to local support services that can improve well-being

There is an estimated 436,000 people currently living with dementia in Australia. Without a medical breakthrough this number is expected to reach more than 1.1 million by 2058.

The five steps to maximise your brain health include:

Step 1: Look after your heart. What’s good for your heart is good for your brain. The risk of developing dementia appears to increase as a result of conditions that affect the heart.

Step 2: Do some kind of physical activity. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, stimulates the growth of brain cells and the connection between them.

Step 3: Mentally challenge your brain. Challenging the brain with new activities helps to build new brain cells and strengthen connections between them.

Step 4: Follow a healthy diet. A healthy, balanced diet that includes vegetables, fruit, fish, grains, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), and lean meat may help in maintaining brain health and functionality.

Step 5: Enjoy social activity. Social interaction with people whose company you enjoy can help to look after the health of your brain.

The Your Brain Matters presentation will be held on Tuesday 12 February 2019, 1.30pm – 3.00pm, at the Supper Room, Bacchus Marsh Public Hall, 207 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, Vic 3340.
